The City of Orlando has announced the launch of a Small Business Digital Permitting. Orlando’s Small Business Digital Permitting is a web-based tool designed around the citizen experience and the site strives to make complex projects, like starting a new business, easier to understand and navigate.
Orlando Mayor Buddy Dyer tasked a team from across City hall to provide a one-stop website where entrepreneurs seeking to open or expand a business can check zoning, identify permit requirements, estimate the costs and fees associated with their project and learn about incentives. The new site will also ensure prospective business owners receive personalized contact from City Staff early in the process.
“Small businesses are the engines of our local economy,” said Dyer. “They create jobs, generate tax revenues and help build vibrant, engaged neighborhoods, but until now, there have been very few tools intentionally designed to give entrepreneurs and small business owners looking to invest in our community a clear breakdown of the processes and complications that they might face.”
By moving this process online, the City is hoping to be able to provide reliable, targeted feedback to its community of entrepreneurs available 24/7, and give staff a new level of insight into economic trends in their community.
The launch of the Small Business Digital Permitting site is the first step to building a Digital City Hall. The Digital City Hall will allow businesses, residents and visitors to access City services via the internet versus having to come into City Hall. Through this initiative, additional digital permitting tools will launch in phases over the next 18 months including an ability to upload plans online and a portal for contractors, developers and residents that allows them the ability to file all permit types online and view and update existing and open permits.
