On Wednesday, Publix Supermarkets Charities announced that they would be donating $5 million dollars to Feeding America Food bank Network to both to help solve the problem of hunger and to raise awareness of Hunger Action Day on September 8th.
“This is why we’re here today to make a difference and to help solve the hunger in our own backyards.” said Todd Jones President and CEO of Publix at a Press Conference “At the end of the day all of you are making a difference in the lives of children, veterans, and seniors. The goal is simple. Feed more people.”
Publix supporters 66 member food banks and partner agencies, who have all submitted requests for specific projects and programs. All of the food banks will receive at least $100,000. Second Harvest Food Bank, who operates here in Central Florida will receive a $200,000 gift.
Feeding American feeds about 46.5 million people each year, using refrigerated trucks to move food and providing program that delivers food to seniors.
Publix will also be turning some of their store checkout lanes orange with messages on checkout stands and point of sale screens to raise awareness of hunger. Each of the attendees at the Press Conference were given an empty plate to symbolize the challenge they were all working together to overcome
