Jesse Phillips is a partner with Certified Network Associates, a local company specializing in IT services, network, server and computer support for Orlando and Central Florida and recently interviewed with Lori Ratto to talk about his experience as a business owner and advice for other entrepreneurs.
Lori Ratto for the Observer: Can you give me an example or experience of how CNA made a positive difference for a client?
Phillips: Some of the most rewarding experiences are when we are able to work with a client who is struggling with their computer setup and help them take their business to the next level. Several clients approached us because their computer could not support where they wanted their company to go in the future. The limitation may be in their current provider, or the fact that they have no IT provider. I was able to spend time getting to know their business model and make recommendations of which technologies and platforms would help them take the next step, while maintain continuity with their current IT assets. Some groups want to come in and sell you all sorts of servers, computers and other gadgets. I am more interested in building the trust that’s necessary to lead to a long term relationship.
Ratto: On your home page Jessephillips.net you have an image and three words written. Will you explain that image and those words?
Phillips: The words are “What matters most” and the Image is my family. Regardless of what you are doing in life, people matter most. For me, it’s my family. It’s why I get up and go to work and why I am driven to work tirelessly to excel at what I do. I am not only providing for them, but am setting an example that they will hopefully follow one day of hard work and dedication. I take great pride in being good at what I do, and that includes my biggest responsibilities of being a father and husband. Excellence is a way of serving others.
Ratto: Why are you successful in business?
Phillips: Hiring an IT consultant or provider is an incredibly important decision. You are deciding who to entrust, with safeguards, with your company’s critical information. This is not a decision you want to make lightly. The incredible proliferation of various technology in today’s information age has made IT services what lawn services used to be—something everybody and their brother thinks they can do. Unlike some of my competition, I’m not merely a technical mind who feels like I can run my own company. I am a well-established leader, known commodity in the community who will protect my clients network and data with the same vigilance that I would protect my own reputation, since that’s what’s on the line when I go to work every day.
Ratto: What advice do you have for anyone interested in entrepreneurship?
Phillips: Don’t be afraid to invest in IT. Your business will suffer if you try to run a business in the 2017 market on top of a network built in 2005. One of the first investments you need to make is in a Chief Information Officer (CIO), someone who understands how business work, and can ensure that every piece of equipment or device you purchase is seamlessly integrating and advancing your unique business model. If, like most small companies you cannot afford a six-figure CIO salary, let me fill the gap. You need a partner to steer your IT ship.
