Democratic Florida House Leadership isn’t responding favorably to a special session that was called by Governor Rick Scott on Friday, to address education funding and economic development issues next week.
Florida House Democratic Leader Janet Cruz had these words.
“This special session is a farce being inflicted upon the people of Florida. While politicians’ priorities are being served, the people of Florida will continue to suffer.”
Scott says he wants to raise per pupil spending per student by $100 dollars. Some Democratic State Lawmakers say that isn’t enough and are slamming a decision by the Governor to sign legislation they believe gives too much powers to charter schools by taking away funding reserved for public schools.
“To pretend this newest backroom deal will help public education in our state is laughable.” adds Cruz “That politicians in positions of leadership are willing to sell out our public schools by approving the creation of a $140 million slush fund for private charter school operators in exchange for an $85 million slush fund for corporate welfare is the epitome of everything that people despise about politics. Welcome to the swamp.”
Republicans have majorities in the State House and Senate. The Governor will also ask the legislature to fund his economic programs, while standing up an $85 million dollar fund to develop the state’s workforce and infrastructure needs.
