Located along the I-4 corridor, the 775-acre SunTrax campus was initially built to test connected and autonomous vehicle technologies and has now expanded to include air technology. The facility includes a 2.25-mile oval speed track and 200 acres of infield for testing connected and autonomous vehicles and tolling systems, owned by FDOT and Florida’s Turnpike Enterprise.
The tenant list has become the story. At an August 2026 event, Gov. Ron DeSantis said Tesla, Waymo and Beep are among the companies working with the state at the facility, and that Tesla’s Cybercab is being tested at SunTrax. The infield can simulate dry and rainy conditions, urban traffic, pedestrian crossings, hills and other conditions autonomous systems could encounter on public roads.
SunTrax is also moving into the air. FDOT Secretary Jared Perdue announced SunTrax Air, describing it as the nation’s first aerial test track, with two new vertiports designed for vertical takeoff and landing aircraft. In August 2026, eVTOL developer AIR announced it would establish its U.S. headquarters and an eVTOL production and flight operations hub at SunTrax, taking roughly 20,000 square feet on campus. FDOT is also partnering with Embry-Riddle and Polk State to help students prepare for careers in next-generation transportation.
Waymo Goes Public in Orlando
The most visible sign of the shift is a driverless Jaguar pulling up curbside. Waymo’s robotaxis entered limited, invite-only public service in Orlando in February 2026, as part of a broader expansion that also brought service to Dallas, Houston and San Antonio. Two months later the waitlist came down. Waymo opened its fully autonomous ride-hailing service to the general public in Miami and Orlando in April 2026, ending a months-long waitlist phase that served more than 150,000 initial riders across the two cities.
The Orlando service area covers Parramore, Richmond Heights, Williamsburg, Florida Center and Southwest Orlando, which is to say the tourism spine along I-4 and I-Drive. Waymo did not disclose ride volume, average daily trips or service-area square mileage for either Florida city. The company is also expanding down the corridor: it is preparing to launch commercial service in Tampa this fall, having completed mapping, started rider-only testing and conducted safety training with area emergency personnel.
Lake Nona: Seven Years of Autonomous Shuttles
Before Waymo, there was Beep. Move Nona launched on September 18, 2019 and is the largest and longest-running single-site autonomous vehicle fleet in the United States, with eight electric shuttles across five fixed routes connecting roughly 10 destinations; rides are free and a trained Beep attendant is aboard at all times.
The program is now moving to a second-generation platform. Orlando is the first deployment city for MOIA America’s autonomous ID. Buzz; validation testing has begun in Lake Nona with passenger rides planned for later in 2026, and MOIA America supplies the vehicles, the Mobileye-developed self-driving system, MaaS software and operator training as a turnkey package. Beep CEO Kevin Reid positioned the partnership as a scaling of the microtransit category rather than a traditional robotaxi play. Beep says expansion of the Lake Nona network will support a 25-shuttle fleet and more than 15 miles of multimodal paths.
Public transit has tested the same idea downtown. LYNX, in partnership with the City of Orlando, demonstrated autonomous vehicle technology on the LYMMO Orange Line from August 2023 to June 2024, with two autonomous vehicles providing service in two four-hour shifts each day; surveys found 85% of riders had a positive experience.
Charging the Corridor
Autonomous fleets are electric fleets, and the charging build-out is keeping pace. The OUC Recharge Hub at the Orange County Convention Center features six 240-kW DC fast-charging ports and is OUC’s second high-speed hub; the first, at 129 W. Robinson Street downtown, opened in July 2023. OUC has obtained approval for projects to install around 40 DC fast-charging ports throughout the Orlando area, and the downtown hub saw more than 1,100 drivers charge there in August alone. OUC also supports a regional Level 2 network of more than 300 chargers at workplaces, campuses and parking garages, while Florida’s NEVI plan is funding additional highway-corridor DC fast chargers along routes including I-4.
Transit is electrifying too. Three quarters of the LYNX fixed-route fleet now runs on renewable compressed natural gas or battery electricity, with remaining diesel buses being replaced as they reach the end of useful life. The agency’s first fully electric bus entered downtown service in 2025, part of a project adding 14 electric buses to the LYMMO lines, backed by a $1.9 million FTA Low or No Emission grant.

The Sensor Base Has Been Reshuffled
Not every chapter has been a growth story. Orlando-headquartered lidar maker Luminar was long the region’s marquee AV hardware company. Luminar filed Chapter 11 bankruptcy, and was acquired by MicroVision on February 2, 2026. The engineering talent pool it built in the Central Florida Research Park remains a regional asset, but the corporate flag now flies elsewhere.

The commercial implications run in several directions. Hospitality and convention operators gain a driverless last-mile option on I-Drive. Fleet operators, insurers and law firms will see new risk categories as robotaxis scale. Real estate near SunTrax stands to benefit from supplier and testing tenants.
